and learning more about the fabulous hormone oxytocin is another obsession of mine. it's truly an amazing arrangement of molecules, all perfectly titrated for maximum love and bonding. just returned from a doula conference where the buzz was all about oxytocin. i learned even more about it. like, it affects nearly every organ system in our bodies.

it stablizes heartrate and rhtyhm, decreases blood pressure and pulse, helps digestion (especially important if you're a baby and have an immature gut), causes sensations of both hunger and satiation, both increases and decreases insulin (whichever response is more appropriate in the body at the time), soothes stress by redusing cortisol levels in the body, raises one's pain threshold, makes one calmer and more sedative.
